Canadian universities and AI detection: U of T, UBC, McGill, Waterloo — how to self-check
Direct answer Popular Canadian universities use Canvas, Quercus, LEARN, Avenue, eClass and similar systems. Some courses wire Turnitin or another similarity tool. Why UBC has to be honest on its own page
Public teaching-support material has said UBC did not enable Turnitin’s AI writing detection. If this hub claimed we “beat UBC Turnitin AI,” that would be a lie. The UBC guide says: when that layer is off, PaperMirror still helps you strip model filler, because humans read, other assignments may check, and policy can change.
Name collisions and co-op
- York University is Keele in Toronto, not York in the UK.
- Western is London, Ontario — not London, UK, and not a US West Coast nickname.
- Waterloo and Northeastern both have placement reports. The reddest copy is HR lyricism.
- McGill sits in a bilingual city. Generator prose about Quebec is usually the thinnest.
