Can Turnitin detect ChatGPT? Don’t panic at 90%+

TL;DR Yes. Unedited model longform often scores very high. Tidy human English can also go red. Read continuous highlights, not one scary total. PaperMirror lets you edit the red band before the school sees it.

Reddit still runs “Turnitin gave me 97% and I did not use AI” next to “I used ChatGPT on the intro and got caught.” Official pages also admit false positives and stress that the report is an indicator, not an automatic verdict. Students need steps they can take before submit.

What it is catching

  • Continuous, smooth paragraphs with no personal evidence — ChatGPT’s default output looks like this.
  • Not “we detected that you logged into OpenAI.” There is no such back door.
  • Light synonym swaps are often not enough. The structure is still there.

Why unused models still go red

Non-native writers, polished academic English, and template literature reviews hit the same statistics. So what to do about false positives is about streak-red versus speck-red, and keeping Doc version history in case you are called in.

If you are flagged, use this order

  1. Open the highlights. List continuously red paragraphs.
  2. If those bands were a model draft: one-click rewrite in PaperMirror, or rewrite the methods / discussion you actually ran.
  3. If those bands were yours: add class examples, data, a failed pilot, and break metronomic long sentences.
  4. Retest into the low-risk band, read it yourself, then submit.
  5. If school policy requires disclosing AI assistance, follow the handbook. PaperMirror does not ghostwrite.

Split 97% into red paragraphs you can edit

In-house engine, three-colour report. Rewrite billed per character, retest immediately.

Scan my draft
Will an outline from ChatGPT get caught?
The outline itself usually never enters the final. Sentences that still sound like a model will. Treat the outline as a list; write the body with your evidence.
Will Grammarly trigger Turnitin?
Grammar polish can make the voice smoother and raise a score. That is a false-positive path, not Grammarly “phoning Turnitin.”

Detection and rewrite are for pre-submit self-checks. Follow your school's integrity policy. PaperMirror is not Turnitin or CNKI. The school system is the source of truth.
